Dear Grandma,

You may not be able to read English but this is a tribute to you.

You took care of me the minute I arrived in this world. I was the first grandchild and you showered all your love and attention on me.

Even as a toddler, I only felt comfortable in your home and would cry whenever I go to other people’s house.

You found a job as a cleaner when I was seven and had to work weekends.

My heart hurt because I didn’t want you to work and also, I couldn’t see you when I came over on Sundays.

I pestered you to quit and even though you liked the job, you did. And I was happy.

I know all along that I love you but I never knew how important you are to me until the night before uncle’s wedding.

I was 12 years old then. I remember that night very clearly.

We were lying on the floor of his new apartment, chatting.

You told me you are very happy that uncle is finally getting married and suddenly, you held my hands and told me that you have prepared a sum of money for my wedding but probably wouldn’t be able to live to that day to pass it to me personally.

You asked me to get it from my uncle when that day comes.

Tears welled up in my eyes. That was when I realized, if I ever got married, I want you to be sitting there with me, at the VIP table, smiling proudly.

I told you I don’t want the money, I just want you to promise that you’ll be there at my wedding and see me get married happily. You promised me that.

It is 13 years later now and I am getting married in 5 months’ time. I wonder if you still remember your promise to me.

I’ve saved a seat for you and grandpa at my wedding and I want you to be well and healthy when you sit beside me on my big day.

You have just gone through an operation to mend your leg bone and I really hope you will take good care of yourself and listen to us when we tell you to watch your diet.

I know you are feeling very down now but always remember that we are here by your side to accompany you, to take care of you.

I know you want to go for a holiday on a cruise. Get well soon and I’ll bring you on the trip next year ok?

I love you, Grandma!
