What I would say to my Grandparents if they are still alive?

“In the end it’s not the years in your life that counts, it’s the life in your years.”
- Abraham Lincoln

This meaningful quote reminded me of my dearly late Grandmother. Grandmother led a difficult life after Grandfather passed away when my mother was about nine. I salute my Grandmother for being such a courageous and independent single mother. Therefore, I always treat her reverently.

I was drowned in solitary sorrow when my Grandmother passed on and left us all. She used to be my best friend. She guided me through my younger years. She taught me the rudimentaries and made me learn the importance of life.

Words hissed incessantly in my mind, saying “If only you were beside me now, then I would not be like a pearl-white snowflake suspended in a tremendous blizzard”. I am gratified if I could make Grandmother elated again and make her enjoy every single bit of her remaining like by bringing her to fascinating places around the world, as that was her wish before she left us. Despite her age, she was still strong, sturdy and always at the pink of health. Now only memories can replay the past but it would not come true.

“No man is rich enough to buy back his past”. If only I could rotate the clock and turn back time, I just hope Grandmother is still right beside me, being the one guiding my way through life’s obstructions and be like a beacon of hope. It was always Grandmother’s soft voice and advices that I could calm myself down when confronting problems, but not my parents’. That was all because Grandmother grew me up.

Her sumptuous dishes never failed to win Mother’s cooking. I used to trace the aroma of her delicious Malay cuisines, not until she left us. Mother’s cooking was attractive but Grandmother’s was better. She used to travel with us whenever we go for December vacations. She had always been amusing as she retold her life stories everytime we visit her. Although she may look very old and withered, with wrinkles here and there, she was hyperactive for her age. Just like the saying which goes like “Wrinkles just simply locate where smiles have been!” and I strongly agree with that because I missed her sweet smile.

To Grandmother, I would just like to say “You’re the best creature I have ever met in this chaotic world and you did a great job in making me a better person! Thank you for being my grandmother! I just hope you’ll still be here with us, enjoying dinner”. Hope you have an exhilarating time up there. Farewell…
