Francis (Entry #989)
I gazed out of the car window while my sister sang her favourite Hi-5 song at the top of her voice. We were on our way to Kuala Lumpur for Chinese New Year.
Every year, our whole family will drive up to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the New Year with my mother’s family. My legs were cramped from sitting in the car for so long.
My grandmother stays with my uncle up north in Penang and they were also on their way to Kuala Lumpur to visit my great-grandmother.
I could not wait to reach Kuala Lumpur to meet the entire clan of grand-aunts and grand-uncles, uncles and aunts and cousins but most of all I was dying to meet my grandmother.
I could already taste my grandmother’s mouth-watering fried rice with sausage. It more than made up for the four hour trip listening to my siblings’ constant bickering.
My grandmother is neither fat nor skinny. She has naturally straight hair which is permed with curls but she keeps her fringe back with a hair comb.
The most prominent part of her features is her nose which is pretty big but it’s supposed to be lucky.
My grandmother is the world’s best cook. She is the Queen of the wok when it comes to cooking.
My grandmother and grandfather use to run a small shop selling delicious treats. When I was younger, I loved helping them at the shop just to eat all my favorite snacks like curry puff and fried banana fritter.
As my grandparents grew older, they decided to close down the shop. They have been running the shop for over twenty years and I thought it was a pity to close down the shop. Even though my grandmother no longer owns the shop, she still bakes cupcakes for me.
My father is an air steward and my mother does not know how to read and speak Chinese.
Whenever I do not know how to do my homework, my grandmother will explain to me slowly. She would look at me with her beautiful kind eyes and teach me patiently. It is with my grandmother’s teaching that my grades have improved a lot.
Grandmother always tells me stories about Malaysia when she comes to Singapore.
She says that back in Malaysia, lots of people like her. She also says that lots of people always ask her to cook food for them. When I heard that I smiled at her.
Grandmother loves my sister and brother and me equally. During each of our birthdays, she would always send a birthday card to us from Malaysia.
I keep all the cards in a big silver box with all my other keepsakes. Whenever I look at them, I will feel a glow of warmth inside my heart.
I really love my grandmother. Without her I will feel completely lost. I will never forget what she has done for me. She taught me to be a kind, generous and cheerful person.
I love you, Grandmother!
