Our Grandparents
Look around us. Everyone has grandparents, who doesn’t? despite whether they are alive or not, I think, we should at least know a little bit of their experiences. Whenever you sit down and have a chat with your grandparents, do keep a pen and paper with you. For all you know, they may come in handy! Here are the memories of my grandparents that I myself have penned down.
Firstly, I will talk about my paternal grandparents. Actually, my paternal grandfather had passed away. At that time, I was only about five years old that was why I was not sure what was happening. Therefore, I did not know how my grandfather passed away. Like any other typical granddaughter, I wept sorrowfully. To me, my grandfather was a great man. Whenever I quarreled with my brother, I would be the first one to cry. When I cried, my first destination would always be my grandfather’s room. He would then console me and mystically take a sweet out from under his pillow. I always felt so surprised even though he did that many times. Till now, I am still sleeping on his pillow!
Ever since my grandfather passed away, my grandmother has lived in a single bedroom apartment in Ang Mo Kio. Once a year, she will go to Taiwan or Thailand with her friends to catch up with her shopping and sightseeing. Also, she buys something for us. Every time the day before we pray to our grandfather, she comes to our house to stay. On the day itself, she wakes up early in the morning to cook some delicious food to bring to the temple.
Now, I will talk about my maternal grandparents. My family visit them about ten times a year. They actually own a hawker stall in Clementi, selling the best homemade fishball noodles. My maternal grandmother is a very nice and loving lady. She always encourages me to study hard before my exams and for each A, my grandmother always gives me a dollar. However, even if I do not get an A, she still gives me a dollar, which is what she calls an “encouragement dollar”. Therefore I promised myself that I will get at least 5 As for the upcoming common test, and do her proud.
My maternal grandfather, well, he is pretty hard to describe. Basically, he is the joker of the family. I think that’s where my older brother inherited his great sense of humour. Sometimes, he would sit down and talk to us about our school and after talking, he would pat us on the back and say “I believe in you”. This is pretty much why I think they are model grandparents.
I have shared the memories and experience of my grandparents. Although I did not exactly pen them down, they stayed tattooed in both my brain and heart and that can never be erased. I hope that they can live to a ripe old age of hundred.
