My Grandparents

I am quite privileged to have all four of my grandparents living healthily. None of my grandparents live with me. My paternal grandparents live with my dad’s older sister. My maternal grandparents live with my mom’s youngest sister since she is not married yet. Even though I do not live with my grandparents, I do visit them every Saturday.

I am more attached to my maternal grandparents. When I visit them, I would usually buy fruits before going to their house. Whenever I see something nice, I would buy it for them, even though there was no special event.

I like to watch television programmes with my maternal grandmother. Some people think that the television programmes that grandmothers watch are boring and outdated but I do not think so. The shows that my grandmother watches are full of rich history and values. For example, my grandmother likes to watch ‘Jewel in the Palace’ which is a Korean drama about the life of a palace maid who became the first woman doctor in Korea.

I like to play Chinese chess with my maternal grandfather. My grandfather is an expert in Chinese Chess and mahjong. Well, I do not know how to play mahjong but I certainly know how to play Chinese Chess, so I decided to play with my grandfather. Whenever I play with him, I never let my guard down; because my grandfather never lost a game when he played with me. Usually, he would be playing mahjong with other people online. I bought the game for his birthday the year before and I helped to install it and taught him how to use the controls. It was easy to teach my grandfather because he understood English very well.

I do spend time with my paternal grandparents as well. Usually, when I visit, I would discuss current affairs with them, such as the recent issue on selling kidneys. They would ask me about school, if I was coping well and give me advice on how to study.

I like spending time with my grandparents. They share their experiences with me and tell me what they did wrongly in the past so that I would not repeat their past mistakes. My grandparents love me very much and care for me, even though they can be naggy at time. They are always there for me when my parents are busy.

On one occasion, both my parents had to go for overseas business trips. So, my maternal grandparents offered to take care of me when they were overseas. When I stayed in their house for those two weeks, I then realized that my grandparents were actually very lonely because they live with my aunt who is usually working and comes home only when they are asleep. Thus, they have nobody to talk to. So, I then resolved to visit them as often as possible. Grandparents cannot be there for us forever, so we should treasure them while they are still alive.
