My Maternal Grandmother

What are grandparents for? They are here to help us to build a complete family. They are to be out shield when we were being scolded. So now I will tell you more about my shield that I use the most… my beloved grandmother!

I was brought up by my maternal grandmother so I am closer to my maternal grandparents. Since young, my grandmother had been a very brave woman in my heart. I used to be really frightened of cats when I was young. There would be a few cats that will enter the house through the gaps on the gate. My grandmother would use the broom and chase the cats away because I would run into my room and would not come out unless the cat was being chased away. She was brave maybe because she had been living in the kampong since young. She was also the eldest in her family so she had to take care of her siblings and she would need to protect her siblings.

The only time I saw her crying was during my great-grandfather’s (My mother’s maternal grandfather) funeral. I went to the funeral on the last day of it as it was a school holiday for me. When I reached there, I saw my grandmother’s eyes were red; I knew that she had cried. That day was the last day of the funeral so they would have to burn the body. On the journey, my grandmother and her siblings were crying very sadly, my tears also rolled down my eyes. That was the only time I saw her crying.

We will visit her at my uncle’s (my mother’s younger brother) house every Friday and will also have our dinner there. We will also go out together on Sundays and public holidays.

During holidays, I will call her everyday to chat with her. Sometimes, I will call her to bring me out to shop. Once, my grandmother brought Aunt Michelle (my mother’s cousin) and me to Woodlands Causeway Point Shopping Centre to choose a persent for Aunt Joan (Aunt Michelle’s elder sister) eighteenth birthday. At first, we do not know what to buy even though we had been looking for a perfect gift quite long but my grandmother advised us to buy a pair of earrings for Aunt Joan.

I have lots of memories spending time with my grandmother and I hope that she could be with me forever but I know that she had to leave me one day. So I will treasure her now and will not take her for granted. I also hope to be able to tell all grandchildren around to treasure their grandparents as our grandparents will not be with us forever, they will leave us one day. It would be too late to cry and regret then.
